The Matrix 4 Brings in Mindhunter Star Jonathan Groff

By  |

The cast of The Matrix 4 continues to grow as Jonathan Groff has just been added to the ensemble. We learned earlier this year, after a couple of years of rumors and discussion, that Warner Bros. is indeed moving forward full steam ahead with a new entry in the iconic and influential sci-fi franchise. Now, we have word that Groff has boarded the sequel, but the big question is, who will the actor be playing?

According to a new report, Jonathan Groff has signed on for a mystery role in The Matrix 4, which doesn’t yet have an official title. No details on the part were revealed, and there is virtually nothing confirmed in the way of story details at this point, so anything would be wild and aimless speculation. That said, Groff did have a role as Agent Holden Ford in Netflix’s Mindhunter, which showed the man can rock a suit. It wouldn’t be difficult to see him taking on a role aking to Hugo Weaving’s Agent Smith. That’s not to say that’s where this will end up going, but it’s something Groff certainly seems capable of.

Jonathan Groff is known best as the voice of Kristoff in Disney’s Frozen and Frozen 2. The animated sequel recently hit theaters and has been dominating at the box office for the past few weekends. Between that and his role on the acclaimed true-crime series Mindhunter, Groff is having quite the moment and his stock is very much on the rise. Some of Groff’s other notable roles include Jesse St. James on Glee and Patrick Murray on Looking. This will mark the 34-year-old actor’s biggest role in a live-action franchise to date.

Details regarding The Matrix 4 remain slim for the time being. It’s been confirmed that Keanu Reeves will reprise his role as Neo, with Carrie-Anne Moss also set to return as Trinity. Original director Lana Wachowski is returning to helm the sequel. Lana Wachowski and Lily Wachowski directed the original trilogy together. For the time being, it hasn’t been made clear why Lily Wachowski isn’t involved, at least not as far as we know, in this installment. Lana Wachowski is co-writing the screenplay alongside Aleksandar Hemon (Sense8) and David Mitchell (Cloud Atlas).

Other cast members include Jada Pinkett Smith (Girls Trip, Magic Mike XXL), who will reprise her role as Niobe. Jessica Henwick (Iron Fist, Game of Thrones) and Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother, Gone Girl) have also been added in unspecified roles, though it’s rumored that Harris will be playing a villain. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Aquaman, Watchmen) is also playing a role and it’s rumored he’ll be playing a young Morpheus, but that has yet to be confirmed. Filming is expected to begin next year, but no release date has been set by Warner Bros. at this time. We’ll be sure to keep you posted as any further details on the project are made available.
