Anthony Daniels is back in the iconic golden suit to play C-3PO again in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. The actor talks about his experience on the set of the final installment in the Skywalker Saga in his new memoir. Daniels’ memoir is titled I Am C-3PO: The Inside Story and he reveals a lot about his 40-plus years of adventures within the Star Wars universe. The actor has had a pretty amazing time over the years, including working on The Rise of Skywalker, though he wishes C-3PO would have had a different ending. There could be SPOILERS for The Rise of Skywalker below, so read ahead at your own risk.
The Rise of Skywalker will not see C-3PO going to the scrap pile. Anthony Daniels admits in his book that he wanted J.J. Abrams to kill his character off. Daniels wanted a “fitting, meaningful end” that might include “a melting down perhaps – a careless scrapping. In human terms, a death, for the Cause.” However, he was denied. Abrams simply replied, “Not on my watch.” So, it appears that C-3PO will live to tell more stories after the latest movie hits theaters.
While he obviously could not go into specifics, Anthony Daniels says his last scene in The Rise of Skywalker is shared with two of C-3PO’s “favorite humans.” As to who those characters are is unclear, but many believe them to be Rey and Finn, which may be shown in the latest trailer. Whatever the case may be, Star Wars fans are definitely intrigued to see where the golden droid goes in the upcoming movie with C-3PO’s mysterious glowing red eyes and Chewbacca’s bowcaster.
Anthony Daniels also reveals that there were a lot of rewrites happening on The Rise of Skywalker set. When that happens, some scenes are changed, while others are completely scrapped altogether. In fact, one of the rewrites saw one of Daniels’ “Beloved scenes gone.” The actor continued by saying, “One lost exchange with Poe haunts me still.” Daniels also revealed that C-3PO and Poe share a lot of scenes together in the upcoming movie, which has been hinted at in the promotional material.
The Rise of Skywalker hits theaters on December 20th. We’re almost a month away from learning how the Skywalker Saga comes to a close, which is probably exciting and a little hard to think about for some fans. With that being said, J.J. Abrams seems confident that he has delivered the goods for both older and newer fans. While that remains to be seen, the movie does have a lot of hype surrounding it and debut of The Mandalorian has helped in that regard, even though we’ve only seen one episode at this point in time.
